COVID-19 Conspiracy Theories
By: Evelyn Moreno

Introduction
Who could have predicted that this year would bring so many challenges? In late 2019, the largest coronavirus outbreak to date was identified in Wuhan, China. The virus spread quickly as soon as it was discovered, and it soon presented a wide range of symptoms. Every person's case was different. As Meredith Shiels contends, “COVID-19 was ranked as the second leading cause of death in 2020” (Shiels et al. 884).
As the virus spread, numerous conspiracy theories began to circulate:
1. The virus was created in a lab as a bioweapon.
2. COVID-19 is no more dangerous than the flu.
3. The vaccine used for this virus alters your DNA.
To dispel these conspiracy theories, let's review the evidence and separate facts from fiction.
Character Analysis

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. 's shows determination while highlighting his commitment to
individual rights and public health. Kennedy, an influential advocate for public health, asserts,
"My determination to uncover the truth about vaccine safety drives my work, despite the
opposition" (Kennedy 45). His unwavering commitment highlights the tension between public
health initiatives and personal freedoms. According to department press Secretary Vianca N.
Rodriguez Feliciano states, “Secretary Kennedy remains committed to working toward a society where people with autism have access to meaningful opportunities, appropriate support, and the full respect and recognition they deserve.” Together, these statements highlight Kennedy’s
unwavering commitment and dedication to supporting marginalized groups, reflecting his
determined personality.
obert F. Kennedy Jr. has demonstrated resilience by continuing to advocate for vaccine safety and public health, even in the face of criticism. Kennedy, a prominent vaccine advocate, states,
"I will continue to advocate for what I believe is right, no matter the consequences" (Kennedy
102). According to CNN Politics “Kennedy is expected to face tough questions from Democrats
regarding his false claims that vaccines cause autism and his conspiratorial rhetoric on federal
agencies and other health policies” (Maher). As we can see he continues to stand up for his
controversial views, even though he knows he will face intense scrutiny and difficult questions
from members of his own party. His resilience to continue his advocacy by reflecting his strong
convictions.
Kennedy’s passion drives his relentless advocacy. BBC News reports that Kennedy wants
to improve the science on vaccine safety, which he believes has “huge deficits,” and that he
seeks to provide good information so people “can make informed choices” (Zurcher). Kennedy believes vaccine safety research needs improvement and achieves to provide the public with
accurate information to guide their choices. Kera Abraham writes that Kennedy says, “we all share a fundamental right to a clean and healthy environment,” and that he is “as committed to protecting that privilege as his father and uncle were to advance the civil rights movement” (Abraham).
Kennedy shows how deeply he cares about environmental issues. Kennedy not only seeks to
improve scientific standards and public understanding, while also believing that everyone
deserves access to a safe and healthy environment.
As a result, we learn from Kennedy’s own words that his work prioritizes vaccine safety
and public health. His determination motivates him to support vulnerable groups and create
better opportunities for them. Encountering opposition and tough questions, Kennedy continues
to remain reliant. His words convey not only his belief in the importance of environmental
justice but also his genuine dedication to the cause, which defines his passionate character. The
sources used helped highlight Robert F. Kenndey Jr. character traits.

Conspiracy Theories
In late 2019, the largest coronavirus outbreak to date was identified in Wuhan, China.
Three conspiracy theories have been highlighted. One theory proposes that the virus was
engineered in a laboratory for use as a biological weapon. The second theory mentions that
COVID-19 poses a similar level of risk as the seasonal flu. The final theory and most interesting
talks about the vaccine used for this virus suggest that it alters your genetic material.
The first conspiracy theory proposes that the virus was created in a lab as a bioweapon.
According to research published in Nature Medicine, “Our analyses clearly show that SARS-
CoV-2 is not a laboratory construct or a purposefully manipulated virus” (Andersen et al.). A
separate report states it is noted that the transmission of the virus from bats to humans through
another animal is “the most likely scenario, and that a lab leak is ‘extremely unlikely” (AP).
However, some people counter these scientific findings by arguing that SARS-CoV-2 was
intentionally engineered in a laboratory due to its unusual genetic traits and the secrecy
surrounding lab research. In a recent report, ABC News stated, “The news that the U.S.
Department of Energy now believes with low confidence’ that the COVID-19 pandemic ‘most
likely’ was the result of a laboratory leak in China, resulted in a firestorm of debate across the
internet”. This reflects the ongoing controversy surrounding the origins of the virus. However,
scientific evidence strongly suggests that the lab creation theory is extremely unlikely and lacks
factual support. The second conspiracy theory suggests that COVID-19 is no more dangerous than the flu. “The case-fatality rate in COVID-19 appears to be higher than in seasonal influenza” (Paltiel et
al. 3625). "But COVID-19 and seasonal flu are not the same thing. Different viruses cause them.
Each illness has its own treatment" (Mayo Clinic). It is widely claimed that COVID-19 and the
flu share similar symptoms and can often be mistaken for one another, which has led to a
common misperception that COVID-19 may no longer be a serious virus and may even be
considered less severe than influenza (AHCA/NCAL). Research demonstrates that COVID-19 is
significantly more dangerous than the flu, contradicting the conspiracy theory.
The last conspiracy theory claims the vaccine used for this virus alters your DNA.
"The claim? COVID-19 mRNA vaccines are 'contaminated' with residual DNA, which could
integrate into human DNA and potentially cause cancer, or even 'turbo cancer'" (Global Vaccine
Data Network). Despite prevalent fears circulating on social media that vaccines may alter an
individual's DNA, research clarifies that vaccines work by introducing a harmless fragment of a
specific bacteria or virus, which then stimulates the body’s immune response to help combat
illness (BBC News; MedlinePlus). Therefore, this theory is clearly unfounded and lacks
scientific support. In response, people have created conspiracy theories about the coronavirus outbreak in Wuhan, China. The first conspiracy theory is an assertion that COVID-19 was deliberately
engineered as a biological weapon for use in warfare. Another conspiracy theory suggests that
the severity of COVID-19 is exaggerated and that it is similar to the flu. The final conspiracy
theory states that the mRNA vaccine can change a person’s genes. Clear communication of
studies can fix these misconceptions. Studies show SARS‑CoV‑2 is not a lab‑made virus, andthat SARS‑CoV‑2 likely came from animals. Educating the public on these points is essential to
foster trust in vaccination efforts and for addressing the spread of misinformation.

Conclusion
The COVID-19 pandemic underscored the critical importance of relying on accurate information and trustworthy sources.
The virus highlights its significant effect on society and the wave of conspiracy theories
that came with its spread. They stressed the need to examine the conspiracy theories that claim
the virus was engineered as a bioweapon, that it is no more dangerous than the flu, and that the
vaccine alters DNA. A review of reliable evidence found that these theories lack factual support
and have insufficient sources. The most effective way to counter misinformation is to depend on
scientific research and trustworthy sources.
